Another glorious July weekend saw the Hash arrive late pm for another of Kylies EHMR camp outs, (thanks again to the absent RA and Curate who seem to be well in with the Big Yun up stairs for good weather of late),
By the time I got there one or two, (My Little Spermhead, 3D, Slug, with Eddie and Ray) had already got their tents up and had made their way to the railway to get the kids a ride on the trains and sample the cider and beer. (Not Eddie and Ray on the cider of course!!)
As time went on the rest of the Hash arrived, Pepé le Pew organising the tents into a coral so we could all “be together” later in the evening to chat, drink and star gaze..
Porky Pie and ARP Warden arrived hot foot from their holiday to the West Country, shame they had forgotten the bungs for their airbeds!! ARP jumped in her car and tore off across the car park like the De-Loren in Back To The Future I, II, (and was there a III??) [Yes there was, it was set in the Wild West-ed] to get them from home in Hitchin.
No Eye Deer declared that she didn’t want to be a “girl” and was going to put her tent up herself without male assistance, which of course being a girl she managed without a problem.
With all the tents erected we set up temporary camp in the middle of the railway tracks to chin wag, drink and eat burgers (no burgers for me of course Sis!!) and ride and drive the trains.
We were joined later by Ketchup and family who had walked down from Hertford Heath (it’s only a couple of miles through the woods said Ketchup) – shame they had forgotten a torch for the journey back and TBT who roared up on his bike.
As the evening went on and beers, ciders and wine were consumed and every one rode on or drove the various trains, (Steam / Diesel / Petrol and Petrol electric).
Hornby OO Gauge was in his element!!! With his ex BR hat on he was the first to drive all the trains and along with the rest of the children rode or drove the trains all night till at least 11:30pm!! Other notable drivers included Slug, Porky, and Ketchup.
The Cider was lovely and you would have thought that Pepé would have learned his lesson from the 25th as he tucked in and didn’t take the “sensible” option of a couple of ciders and then go on the beer. Both he and My Lil’ Sperm ‘ead were a bit the worse for wear in the morning.
Everyone had great fun riding on and driving the trains in the dark with their lights on, well that is until a slightly tipsy Pepé decided to have a drive – strangely enough there were no passengers on his train!?
How there was not a Great Train Disaster I’ll never know given that there were four trains on the circuit and I believe neither were the signals working or if they were they weren’t being obeyed! It’s a good job they don’t breathalyse you for driving a miniature train for being under the influence!!
Eventually the trains had to go to bed and the last two responsible EHMR people (Kylie and one other) parked them in their various sheds / tunnels etc. The Hash made their way back to the camp site – TBT attempting it on his bike – oh dear did it hurt TBT – he only managed a few yards before crashing off the track. After a few more drinks and much deliberation about staying or not TBT cycled home (it is not far) without incident – that he can remember - except there was something about having to climb over a gate to get out and falling over his neighbours fence. But well done for turning up to the run on Sunday despite a jippy tummy. (Hmmm too much cider???)
A bleary eyed Hash awoke Sunday morning and after a false start of trying to get a Mc D’s at 08:00 Porky, ARP and Fliptop purchased some bacon to go on Paxo’s portable BBQ. Everyone tucked into Bacon butties (except Veggies) courtesy of Chef Pepé le Pew.
The threat of a shower got most people to strike camp before the run on Sunday. Those left from the night before were joined by Sloppy, Windmill and Bus Stop for the run. The circle would have been called by the Joint Master – the masterful Mark E Mark but he was otherwise engaged in the Van Hague’s toilets (Hmmm that Cider again?)
The Hare – Kylie – was called on to let us know about the trail and he warned of Railways and horses, (the pack were now hoping for a really short trail around the EHMR track! He also said it was one and On with T’s and Bar Checks.
The trail led out of Van Hagues main gates to a check which caught out the old FRB’s. Fliptop found the On and lead the Hash (for the only time), down Walnut Tree Walk to the next check where he went badly wrong on a falsie towards the A10. The pack were soon on down the hill through Amwellbury Farm to the next check by the New River on the junction of London Rd / Amwell Hill and Lower Road. Here the hare offered a very short cut and short cut but he managed to cajole every one to go on the full trail by promising a drink stop! It was from here that TBT beat a hasty retreat to his house for an urgent emergency pit stop.
The trial lead down to the River Lea Navigation, via a railway foot crossing of the East Herts to Liverpool St line. Not sure if it was a check but by the time I got there the trail lead over the bridge by Hardmead Lock to a welcome beer stop (not too many takers for the Cider though!!).
Back over the bridge and along the Lea to the next bridge and back up and over the railway to Lower Rd. From here the trail ran along the new River towards Emma’s Well. A check in the church yard caught a few FRB’s out as the correct trail went pass the pub and down Church Path to the On Inn just before joining Amwell Hill to Van Hague’s entrance.
The Hash gathered back at the EHMR camp site for the circle but unfortunately I had to shoot off to cricket (we won) so JM Mark E Mark was tasked with the formalities.
